Narita Airport to Hakuba, Nozawa Onsen, Myoko Kogen: (NAGANO)

There are 2 methods of travel from Tokyo/Narita Airport to the Nagano Region.

1. Train / Bus Combo

Firstly you take the Narita Express (NE’X) from the airport to Tokyo station. This takes approximately 1 hour and the voice over on the train will announce your arrival to Tokyo Station in Japanese and English.

From Tokyo Station you change trains and jump on the Nagano Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagano. This takes approximately 1hr 45mins. The Shinkansen does up to 320km/h and passes through some beautiful little Japanese villages on the way through to Nagano. It is similar to travelling onboard a plane with amenities in every cabin as well as a food cart service where you can buy cheap snacks or hot meals.

The Shinkansen stations are very easy to navigate with large signs as well as English speaking attendants to help you if you get lost and are in a rush to board your train.

You must also pay close attention to the platform you board your train from as quite often a 20 carriage train will divide into 2 separate trains with carriages 10-20 going South and 1-9 going North. This information will be outlined on your ticket.

To purchase Shinkansen Tickets simply use the ticket machines throughout Tokyo Station (looks similar to an ATM machine). If you find this hard to understand you can queue up in the Shinkansen ticket offices scattered throughout the station.

Once you arrive in Nagano, depending on where you are going:  Hakuba, Nozawa or Myoko you then jump on a bus from a separate terminal to your resort which takes about 1 hour depending on traffic and conditions on the road. Generally if it is snowing a lot it will take up to 2 or 3 hours max.  If you have a smooth run this can be the fastest method of transport taking appx 3 – 4 hours.

Average Adult Cost:

NE’X = ¥3,800 per person (one way)

Nagano Shinkansen = ¥7,400 per person (one way)

Nagano Bus = ¥1,600 per person (one way)

The last Shinkansen departs Tokyo for Nagano at 6:30pm. Most flights from Australia don’t arrive into Narita until between 6 - 8pm. This ultimately means you need to stay a night in Tokyo and get the morning Shinkansen to Nagano. The other option and 2nd fastest way of getting to Hakuba / Nozawa Onsen / Myoko Kogen is by direct airport transfer.

2. Direct Airport Shuttle

Takes 4 to 5 hours weather dependant.  If navigating platforms and lugging heavy bags through train stations with your kids under foot isn’t your thing there are also shuttle bus services out of Tokyo/Narita Airport.

Option a)  Nagano Shuttle operate 2 departures from Narita each day to Hakuba, Nozawa and Myoko Kogen.  It can take between 5 – 6 hours depending on weather conditions once you get a little closer to the mountains.

Option b)  Chuo Taxi – Takes 3 to 4 hours weather dependant

The taxi will do private pick-ups at any time from the airport. This works well for people arriving late who have missed the Nagano Shuttle or simply want the fastest most efficient way of getting to their accommodation. It is a door to door service so will drop you at the front door of your accommodation.

This service must be booked 7 days in advance. The price is a set rate of ¥13,500 per person one way and will not change dependant on the number of people travelling in the taxi. So even if there is one person the price will remain the same.

World Snowfaris can book Nagano Shuttle and Chuo Taxi on your behalf.  Just ask us once your accommodation is confirmed!
